What exactly is a Digital Product Passport?

A DPP is a structured digital record — accessed by scanning a code on the product — containing data about a product's materials, origin, sustainability and circularity. Under the EU's ESPR, it becomes a legal requirement for products sold in the EU, rolled out category by category from 2027.

When does it become mandatory for my products?

Batteries lead on 18 February 2027, with iron & steel, textiles, furniture and other categories following through 2030 under the ESPR working plan. Each category gets its own delegated act with a transition period — but buyers and retailers are already asking suppliers for DPP readiness today.

We're not an EU company. Does this apply to us?

Yes — the rules apply to every product placed on the EU market, wherever it's made. If you manufacture outside the EU, your importer or authorised representative carries legal responsibility, and they will require passport data from you. Passmith supports both sides of that relationship.

What data does a passport have to contain?

It depends on your product category's delegated act — typically material composition, origin, substances of concern, durability and repairability information, and recycling guidance. Passmith's templates map each category's requirements so you always know which fields are mandatory.

Is GS1 Sunrise 2027 the same thing as the DPP?

No — but they meet on the same QR code. Sunrise 2027 is GS1's global retail transition from 1D barcodes to GS1 2D barcodes: by the end of 2027, retail checkouts worldwide are expected to scan 2D barcodes carrying GS1 Digital Link. The DPP is EU regulation. One Passmith QR serves both: the till scans it as a barcode, while consumers, customs and recyclers open your product passport from the very same code.
