A Digital Product Passport is a structured digital record of a product — its identity, materials, compliance documents and end-of-life information — reached through a data carrier on the product, usually a QR code. The EU is making it mandatory step by step: batteries from 18 February 2027 under the Battery Regulation, then product group by product group under the ESPR framework.
GS1 sits alongside it rather than inside it: the same square on the pack can carry a GS1 Digital Link, so one code serves both the checkout and the passport. That convergence is why these guides cover both subjects rather than one.
Which guide to start with
If you supply European buyers and want to know what will be asked of you, start with the passport guide and then your own category. If you are planning the work itself, start with the eight-step implementation plan and the registry guide. If your question is the code on the pack rather than the data behind it, start with GS1 2D barcodes.
